In this session, we will cover myxomatous mitral valve disease, hypertrophic cadiomyopathy, and their treatments. We will also discuss whether diet is the cause of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs and the cure for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in cats.

Speaker's Biography
Dr. Mark Dirven
DVM DECVIM-CA Cardiology
Mark Dirven graduated as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Utrecht University, The Netherlands in 2004. After graduation, he worked in several clinics in The Netherlands where he gained experience and received additional training in the fields of internal medicine, abdominal ultrasonography, cardiology and echocardiography. In 2012, he was asked to join the cardiology team of the companion animal clinic of Utrecht University. He combined his work in private practice with his work in the university veterinary hospital, where a worked as a cardiology resident from 2012-2017. In March 2017 he passed his certifying exam to become a European specialist in cardiology (Diplomate ECVIM-CA Cardiology). From 2017 until 2019, he continued to work as a cardiology specialist in a referral only private hospital and the Utrecht university veterinary hospital.
In January 2019, he moved from The Netherlands to Sweden where he is based at one of the largest companion animal hospitals in Europe, Evidensia Sodra animal hospital in the Stockholm area. He leads the Cardio Department of the hospital where he is involved in patient care, research and teaching of vets, nurses and cardiologists in training. He is also responsible for the post graduate cardiology education within the entire Evidensia chain of hospitals in Sweden. Additionally, he is an associate editor for the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology and a board member of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology. His background in both private practice and academia helps him his clinical work, but also in his way of lecturing and teaching. He is valued for his hands-on approach to translating science into practice.
