Valvular Heart Disease: Little dogs, Bigger and Bigger Hearts
This presentation will emphasize a logical approach to identifying and treating chronic valvular disease from primary respiratory disease. Diagnostic tests including thoracic radiography, electrocardiography and echocardiography will be reviewed. Building on the basics above, emphasis will be placed on a logical approach to therapy of varying degrees or severity of valvular heart disease. Therapy of asymptomatic disease as well as advanced disease will be covered. Newer, but as of yet unproven, therapies will be discussed.
Feline Myocardial Disease: Thick Hearts, Thin Hearts and Clots
This presentation will cover the diagnosis and therapy of primary myocardial diseases of cats. Results of frequently used diagnostic tests including physical examination, thoracic radiography, echocardiography as well as genetic testing and biomarkers will be covered. Medical management of both preclinical disease and manifestations of congestive heart failure covered using clinical case material. The current opinions and published data concerning the role of pimobendan will be presented.
Speaker Biography
Dr. Matthew W. Miller
DVM, MS, DACVIM (Cardiology)
Dr. Miller received his doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University in 1984 and his Masters of Science degree from the same university in 1993. He completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group from 1984-1985, and a cardiology residency at the Ohio State University from 1985-1988. Dr. Miller became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) in 1988.
Dr. Miller has served as a faculty member at Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences where he achieved the position of full professor with tenure. He is currently the founding medical director and a staff cardiologist at the Thrive North Scottsdale Animal Specialty and Emergency Hospital, and Thrive Pet Healthcare's National Specialty Director of Cardiology.
