The 12-month rotating internship programme provides an opportunity for new graduates or recently qualified veterinarians to receive high-quality postgraduate training in small animal veterinary medicine under the supervision of experienced clinicians at VMC. The emphasis of the programme is on gaining practical clinical experience in small animal anaesthesia. This provides the intern with an opportunity to participate in a specialist veterinary discipline and may allow the intern to prepare for a Residency programme, if they have other clinical experience and have the desire to become a specialist, or for a clinical anaesthesia post. CityU VMC is an approved training centre for European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA).

Programme aims:

Develop a fundamental understanding of basic anaesthesia and analgesia principles.
Using these principles, perform individual general anaesthesia of basic cases, and when the intern demonstrates increasing ability and knowledge, more complex cases.
Assist in ASA 4 and 5 cases to learn the complexity that anaesthesia may require.
Be involved in a busy and growing anaesthesia service with 2 diplomates, one clinician, one resident and 8 nurses. Participate fully in the day-to-day running of the anaesthesia service, join all relevant clinical anaesthesia activities and also academic activities.
Involvement in teaching final year veterinary students, trainee nurses and internal staff.
Gain team-working, anaesthesia safety and communication skills.
Gain an understanding of research methods and scientific writing through Journal and Book Club and have the opportunity to design and undertake a small clinical research project.

We want to introduce Dr. Isaac Del Busto Castro, an HK and European board-certified veterinary specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Starting in December 2024, Dr. Isaac del Busto is the newest member of the team. Originally from Spain, 2011 he moved to the UK soon after graduating in 2011. After working for the PDSA the vet charity for pets in need in Scotland and England for a few years, he completed an internship and residency in small animal internal medicine at Liverpool University in 2019. After this, he moved to Chester Gates Veterinary Specialists in England that year, where he achieved his diploma as a specialist in internal medicine in companion animals.

Since then, he has worked as a referral clinician at VetOracle, giving advice and guidance regarding medical cases to primary veterinarians. In 2022, he moved to Singapore to continue his career as a specialist, and now he has decided to join AMAH to offer specialist care to pets in Hong Kong.

Dr. Del Busto's skills include gastrointestinal endoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, and cystoscopy, as well as thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, and thoracic drain placement. He also has skills in preliminary interpretation of CRX, ultrasound (US), CT, and MRI.

When he is not working, he uses his time to do training and work out, eat, travel, and be his little dog, Bimba.

Announcement from Animal Medical Academy Hospital (AMAH): Dr. Nicolas Barthelemy

Specialist in Small Animal Surgery

We want to introduce Dr Nicolas Barthelemy, an HK and European board-certified veterinary specialist in surgery. Dr Nico joined AMAH recently. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in surgeries, especially orthopedics, including total hip replacement (THR).

Dr. Nicolas Barthelemy graduated from the University of Liege, Belgium, in 2007. He completed a two years small animal internship at the National Veterinary School of Nantes, France, and the University of Liege. In 2011, he finished a one-year International Surgical Fellowship at Michigan State University, USA, then returned to Europe to work as a research associate at the Laboratory for Veterinary Orthopaedic Research at the University of Liege, Belgium.

He did an ECVS residency in small animal surgery at the University of Liege between 2012 and 2015 and passed his final exam in 2016 to become an EBVS specialist in small animal surgery. He joined Langford Vets Small Animal Teaching Hospital, University of Bristol, UK, in October 2016 until August 2024.

His clinical interests include complex fractures, arthroscopy, stifle surgery, and joint replacement. In 2017, he became certified in BioMedtrix Total Hip Replacement Surgery, performing hundreds of surgeries on small and giant breed animals. He is involved in research and has spoken at international surgery congresses. Dr. Barthelemy is excited to open a new total hip replacement service at the Animal Medical Academy.
