Aims:
The HKVA are in the process of establishing a Clinic Accreditation
Scheme and a draft document can be viewed at: http://www.hkva.org/html/ClinicAccreditation.html
The goal of the Clinic Accreditation scheme is to provide
members of the public with an objective means of knowing the
standard of a veterinary clinic beyond the waiting room. The
standards have been drafted based on similar USA/Australian
and New Zealand schemes and take into account the unique aspects
of veterinary practice in Hong Kong. The minimum standards
have been devised to be realistically achievable and in line
with minimum best practice standards worldwide. The scheme
will be voluntary. The HKVA hopes to implement the scheme
in 2005.

Introduction:
The Veterinary Public Health (VPH) Subcommittee was founded
on the 20th April 2004 to promote the general interest of
veterinary public health in the region and to provide advice
to HKVA members, the public and the Government on any matter
relating to veterinary public health. During the inaugural
meeting on the 19th May 2004, Dr Henry Cheung was elected
to be the spokesperson for any public forums relating to the
function of this subcommittee. Since its establishment, this
subcommittee has successfully accomplished its first assignment
by providing the Government with feedback on a consultation
paper entitled "Prevention of Avian Influenza - Long-term
Direction to Minimise the Risk of Human Infection". Drs
Henry Cheung and John Teather attended a special Legco meeting
on 4 June 2004 and presented this paper to the Government
on behalf of the HKVA. The VPH subcommittee has also be active
in dealing with issues such as Japanese Encephalitis (JE)
and Bovine Spongioform Encephalopathy (BSE).
