Nicholas Kannegieter
Graduated in Veterinary Science
at Sydney University in 1983
and undertook an internship
at the Rural Veterinary Centre,
University of Sydney in 1984.
The next four years were spent
at Massey University in New
Zealand as a Junior Lecturer
/ Lecturer undertaking a PhD
in laryngeal hemiplegia and
receiving post graduate training
in Equine surgery. Admitted
as a member of the Australian
College of Veterinary Scientists
by examination in Equine surgery
in 1988. Took up the position
of Registrar in Equine Medicine
and Surgery at Sydney University
in 1990 and was promoted to
Senior Registrar in 1992 until
1995. Obtained Fellowship of
the Australian College of Veterinary
Scientists in Equine Surgery
in 1990 and was granted Specialist
registration in Equine Surgery
by the NSW Veterinary Surgeons
Board in 1991, by the ACT Vet
Surgeons Board in 1997 and by
Queensland in 2001. Member of
the Executive of the Australian
Equine Veterinary Association
(AEVA) from 1990-2001 (President
1994) and on AVA Board of Directors
from 1996-2001. Currently Chairman
of the AVA Insurance Advisory
Committee. Examiner at Fellowship
level for the ACVSc in Equine
Surgery since 1997. Published
approximately 25 scientific
papers with special interests
in the respiratory tract and
orthopaedic surgery, particularly
arthroscopic surgery.
Since 1996 has been a Consultant
Equine Surgeon in Private practice,
providing surgical services
and second opinions on cases
and radiographs for veterinarians
in equine clinics throughout
NSW, the ACT, Queensland and
other parts of Australia.

Dan
graduated from Liverpool University
in 1987. After eighteen months
in practice at the Churchfield
Veterinary Centre in Barnsley,
he began a residency in small
animal surgery at the University
of Liverpool . Dan gained an
RCVS Certificate in Veterinary
Radiology in 1990 and a Certificate
in Small Animal Orthopaedics
in 1991. Dan moved to the University
of Pennsylvania in 1991 as a
Lecturer in Surgery and where
he became Assistant Professor
of Surgery in 1994. He became
a diplomate of the American
College of Veterinary Surgeons
in 1999. He joined the Queen
Mother Hospital at the Royal
Veterinary College in London
as a Lecturer in Soft Tissue
Surgery in October 2000 and
became a Senior Lecturer in
2003. He is particularly interested
in cardiothoracic and vascular
surgery, plastic and reconstructive
surgery, surgical management
of urinary incontinence, gastrointestinal
surgery and surgery of the conducting
airways. Dan's research interests
are cardiac mechanics and support
of the failing myocardium.

Professor
David Mellor is currently
Professor of Applied Physiology
and Bioethics, Professor of
Animal Welfare Science and Co-Director
of the Animal Welfare Science
and Bioethics Centre at Massey
University in New Zealand, positions
he has held since 1998. Professor
Mellor's research and scholarly
interests include: fetal and
neonatal physiology, stress
physiology, pain assessment
and management, and bioethics
as it applies to animal welfare.
He has more than 415 publications
in these areas, at least 230
of which are significant works
of scholarship, including 4
books. He has made sustained
contributions to animal welfare
science and bioethical thinking
throughout the last 28 years.
Recently he was the lead coordinating
editor of an OIE (World Organisation
for Animal Health) Technical
Series volume entitled "Scientific
assessment and management of
animal pain" (OIE Technical
Series 10, 1-210). With colleagues
E Patterson-Kane and KJ Stafford
he has just completed a book
entitled "Sciences of Animal
Welfare"

Kurt
Verkest graduated from the University
of Queensland in 1995, and has
been in small animal practice
ever since. He attained Membership
of the Australian College of
Veterinary Scientists in Small
Animal Medicine, winning the
Best Candidate in Small Animal
Medicine medal, in 2000. He
started and co-owned a practice
in Brisbane for 8 years before
joining us in Hong Kong.
Kurt has been a consultant on
the Veterinary Information Network's
(VIN) Oncology folder for three
years, where he has answered
over 3000 questions about cancer
care and wrote or co-wrote four
oncology-related FAQ pages.
He hosted VIN rounds on getting
started in chemotherapy and
principles of oncology. He was
recruited by the Centre for
Companion animal Health for
a research program on the endocrinology
of obesity in dogs. He anticipates
completing his PhD in 2009.

Jason Lih-Seng Yeh graduated
as a veterinary surgeon from
National Taiwan University in
1984 and obtained his PhD in
1995. He has been working at
the Veterinary Teaching Hospital
and teaching at the Department
of Veterinary Medicine of National
Taiwan University since 1986.
He is now the chief of surgical
section of the Veterinary Teaching
Hospital and Professor of Institute
of Veterinary Clinical Sciences
at the National Taiwan University.
He spent a few years in USA
working at the University of
California, Davis, California
as Associate specialist at the
Department of Surgical and Radiological
Sciences, School of Veterinary
Medicine; Research Associate
at the Comparative Transplantation
Laboratory of Department of
Surgical and Radiological Sciences,
School of Veterinary Medicine;
and Visiting Scholar at the
Department of Surgical and Radiological
Sciences, School of Veterinary
Medicine. He has numerous publications
in journals, as well as chapters
in veterinary text books. Besides
his special interest in veterinary
surgery, he also takes an active
role in promoting animal welfare.
He protects animals by giving
lectures in different conferences
and provides technical input
to the animal welfare law in
Taiwan.

'Aspects
of dental radiography, extraction
techniques and oral surgery'

Four
wet-labs will be run on the 19th
and 20th June, 2008. The times
will be 9.30am-12.30pm and 2.00pm-5.00pm.
Each lab will have 6 participants
working in groups of 2 persons.
Each group will have its own set
of equipment provided.
Venue:
The Dental Workshops will be
held at the Animal House situated
at the Chinese University of
Hong Kong. The University is
situated in the New Territories.
For people travelling on the
KCR from TST please alight at
University Station. Exit on
the University (left) side of
the station, turn right and
start walking up the hill. Take
the first turn on the right
which will lead you over a railway
bridge. Follow the road to its
end and you will arrive at the
Animal House. There will be
signs along the road.
Please refer to the attached
map.
The
cost of the workshop is:

To
try to cater for as many people
as possible the same wet-lab
will be repeated four times.
Each wet-lab will have only
six participants who will be
split up into three groups consisting
of two people each. All of the
equipment that you require will
be provided.
Each
wet-lab will run for half a
day. Two labs will be run on
Thursday 19th June and two labs
will be run on Friday 20th June.
The times will be 9.30am-12.30pm
and 2.00pm-5.00pm.
The
fee of HK$1,100 for members
and HK$1,600 for non-members
is for a single 3 hour (half
day) wetlab. It does NOT include
free entry to the seminar. If
you wish to attend the seminar
then the normal fee of HK$300
for members and HK$500 for non-members
will apply.
Registration
is on a first come first served
basis. Registration is on an
individual basis which means
that if you wish to go you will
have to individually register.
Your clinic cannot make a group
booking. Registrations close
on the 31st May, 2008 however
the first twenty-four people
to register will be notified
of an offer of a place and given
payment details and will have
until 7th June to send their
payment in full to the HKVA
Secretariat. If payment has
not been received by this date
then your place may be offered
to someone else. Payment will
not be accepted on the day of
the wet-lab. Please do not send
your payment until you have
been notified of your acceptance
into the course.
If
you fail to attend the course
your fee will not be refunded
unless a replacement can be
found in time. You may nominate
somebody else to take your place
if you wish.

Derek
graduated from The University
of Queensland in 1995. He then
returned to Hong Kong and worked
at Happy Valley Veterinary Clinic
and Hospital where he assisted
various overseas visiting specialists
in consultation and surgery.
He was trained by Dr Richard
Smith in Veterinary Ophthalmology
on a part time basis both in
Hong Kong and Brisbane, Australia.
From 2005 to 2006, Derek was
the resident at Animal Eye Care,
Melbourne, Australia, where
he worked with Drs Robin Stanley,
Chloe Hardman and Anu O'Reily.
During his tenure in Melbourne,
he was responsible for all primary
ophthalmic cases and surgeries.
He also assisted in teaching
undergraduate students at the
University of Melbourne. Derek
is now working full time at
Peace Avenue Veterinary Clinic
where he deals predominantly
with ophthalmic cases in all
species. Derek continues to
advance his knowledge and techniques
in Veterinary Ophthalmology
under a part time training program

Stan Marks (BVSc, PhD, DACVIM
(Internal Medicine, Oncology),
DACVN Professor of Internal Medicine)
Dr.
Marks graduated from the University
of Pretoria, South Africa, in
1986 and completed an internship
in small animal medicine and
surgery at the University of
Missouri, Columbia in 1987.
He completed a small animal
internal medicine residency
program the at University of
Florida and an oncology residency
program at the University of
California, Davis. Dr. Marks
received his PhD in Nutrition
from the University of California,
Davis, where he is currently
a Professor in the Department
of Medicine and Epidemiology,
and Associate Director of the
Small Animal Clinic. Dr. Marks
is a Diplomate of the American
College of Veterinary Internal
Medicine (ACVIM) in the specialities
of internal medicine and oncology,
and a Diplomate of the American
College of Veterinary Nutrition
(ACVN). He is the Director of
the Companion Animal Gastroenterology
Laboratory that focuses on furthering
their understanding and knowledge
of bacterial-associated diarrhoea,
with an emphasis on Clostridial
diseases. In addition, Dr. Marks
has research interests in the
nutritional modulation of inflammatory
bowel disease. He has published
extensively in these areas,
and has contributed chapters
to a number of textbooks.

Tip Wong DVM, MVS, MACVSc (Surgery)
Wing
Tip Wong obtained his Doctor
of Veterinary Medicine from
the Agriculture University Malasia
(UPM) in 1980. He then completed
his surgical training at the
University of Melbourne in 1982
where he also received his Master
of Veterinary Studies. In 1991
he was awarded membership in
the Australian College of Veterinary
Scientists by examination in
Small Animal Surgery.
Wing
tip has spent most of his time
as a clinician and teacher.
He taught at his Alma Mater
and worked for several years
in private practice in Malaysia.
He returned to Melbourne in
1988 and worked at the Veterinary
Clinic and Hospital, The University
of Melbourne. >From 1999
he spent 14 months as Staff
Surgeon in private referral
practice. Currently he is Consultant
Surgeon (Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery)
in
the Veterinary Clinic and Hospital
as well as Principal Fellow
in the Department of Veterinary
Science, The University of Melbourne.
He also serves as Staff Surgeon
for Animal Hospitals of Australia.
Wing
Tip has contributed to teaching
in the undergraduate program
as well as continuing education
for practising veterinarians.
He conducts workshops on surgical
techniques in orthopaedics and
is a tutor for the Distance
Education Program in Surgery
offered by the Post Graduate
Foundation in Veterinary Science,
University of Sydney.

day workshop which will be run
twice. The workshop is a cytology
based workshop with a haematology
component. It will consist of
a series of 20 cases and participants
will move from one case to the
next. Each case will be discussed
in detail. Photographs of the
salient features of each of
the cases and the powerpoint
file will be made available
with a full set of notes for
those who attend.

Prof.
Alun Williams - graduated
as a veterinary surgeon from the
University of Glasgow in 1985.
After a short period in general
practice, he joined the Department
of Clinical Veterinary Medicine,
University of Cambridge, where
he completed his PhD investigating
the pathogenesis of Streptococcus
suis type 2 meningitis in the
pig. He then moved to the University
Department of Paediatrics, John
Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, to
conduct studies on the pathogenesis
of Haemophilus influenzae type
b meningitis before returning
to Scotland in 1990 to become
Named Veterinary Surgeon and Principal
Research Scientist at the Institute
for Animal Health, Neuropathogenesis
Unit, Edinburgh. Here, he investigated
aspects of peripheral and central
pathogenesis of prion diseases,
including the mechanism of neuronal
degeneration and disease transmission
between sheep. Alun moved back
to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine,
University of Glasgow in 1997
to become Senior Lecturer and
then Reader in Veterinary Pathology,
continuing his research interests
and also conducting undergraduate
teaching in veterinary pathology,
post-graduate training and being
a member of the diagnostic pathology
team. He also extended his research
interests to enteric bacterial
diseases and veterinary public
health. He became a de facto Diplomate
of the Europeon College of Veterinary
Pathologists in 1998. Alun was
appointed as Professor and Head
of Department of Pathology and
Infectious Diseases at the Royal
Veterinary College, University
of London in 2003 and is now Vice-President
(Europe) of the C.L.Davis DVM
Foundation. He continues to take
an active role in teaching, diagnostic
pathology and infectious disease
research. |

pioneer in the computerised
cataract surgery technique known
as phacoemulsification and was
the first person in Australia
to use this technique and implant
intra-ocular lenses in 1990.
He has taught ophthalmology
to Veterinary students and given
continuing education courses
to Veterinary practitioners
for the last 20 years. He has
numerous publications in journals,
as well as chapters in veterinary
text books.
Richard
started a specialist ophthalmology
practice in Brisbane in 1997
and during that time trained
DR Michael Bernays, Dr Edith
Hampson and Dr Denise Brudenall.
He has also spent many years
training Dr Derek Chow on a
part time basis.
Richard
has been visiting Hong Kong
for the past 15 years seeing
referrals at the Happy Valley
Veterinary Clinic. He has lectured
to Hong Kong Vets in the past
and is committed to training
Vets as much as possible in
the limited time he spends in
Hong Kong.
Richard
retired from full time specialist
practice two years ago but still
does part time ophthalmology
clinics in north Queensland
and Hong Kong.
