I am writing to you on behalf of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association regarding the 29th World Veterinary Congress (WVC 2008) to be held in Vancouver, Canada from July 27 - 31, 2008.

The 29th World Veterinary Congress will be one of the premier events of the Veterinary Profession worldwide with attendance expected to reach over 2,500. Participants will include veterinarians, para-veterinarians, veterinary technicians and others who partner with us in animal care. While the program is designed to ˇ§Celebrate our Diversityˇ¨ it is also intended to bring veterinarians from all fields together in recognizing that, despite our diversity, we professionally have a common goal.

27-30 April, 2008 VPAT Regional Veterinary Congress 2008 Venue : Bangkok, Thailand The Veterinary Practitioner Association of Thailand (VPAT) and the Organizing Committee cordially invites veterinarians throughout Asia to participate in the 2 nd annual VPAT Regional Veterinary Congress (VRVC2008) to be held on 27-30 April, 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Dr. Stan Marks (BVSc, PhD, DACVIM (Internal Medicine, Oncology), DACVN Professor of Internal Medicine)

Dr. Marks graduated from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, in 1986 and completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1987. He completed a small animal internal medicine residency program the at University of Florida and an oncology residency program at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Marks received his PhD in Nutrition from the University of California, Davis, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology, and Associate Director of the Small Animal Clinic. Dr. Marks is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in the specialities of internal medicine and oncology, and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN). He is the Director of the Companion Animal Gastroenterology Laboratory that focuses on furthering their understanding and knowledge of bacterial-associated diarrhoea, with an emphasis on Clostridial diseases. In addition, Dr. Marks has research interests in the nutritional modulation of inflammatory bowel disease. He has published extensively in these areas, and has contributed chapters to a number of textbooks.

Wing Tip Wong DVM, MVS, MACVSc (Surgery)

Wing Tip Wong obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Agriculture University Malasia (UPM) in 1980. He then completed his surgical training at the University of Melbourne in 1982 where he also received his Master of Veterinary Studies. In 1991 he was awarded membership in the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Small Animal Surgery.

Wing tip has spent most of his time as a clinician and teacher. He taught at his Alma Mater and worked for several years in private practice in Malaysia. He returned to Melbourne in 1988 and worked at the Veterinary Clinic and Hospital, The University of Melbourne. >From 1999 he spent 14 months as Staff Surgeon in private referral practice. Currently he is Consultant Surgeon (Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery) in
the Veterinary Clinic and Hospital as well as Principal Fellow in the Department of Veterinary Science, The University of Melbourne. He also serves as Staff Surgeon for Animal Hospitals of Australia.

Wing Tip has contributed to teaching in the undergraduate program as well as continuing education for practising veterinarians. He conducts workshops on surgical techniques in orthopaedics and is a tutor for the Distance Education Program in Surgery offered by the Post Graduate Foundation in Veterinary Science, University of Sydney.

Cytology Workshops

WORKSHOP

The cytology workshop is a half day workshop which will be run twice. The workshop is a cytology based workshop with a haematology component. It will consist of a series of 20 cases and participants will move from one case to the next. Each case will be discussed in detail. Photographs of the salient features of each of the cases and the powerpoint file will be made available with a full set of notes for those who attend.

The Cytology Workshop will be held at the Animal House situated at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The University is situated in the New Territories. For people travelling on the KCR from TST please alight at University Station. Exit on the University (left) side of the station, turn right and start walking up the hill. Take the first turn on the right which will lead you over a railway bridge. Prof. Alun Williams - graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Glasgow in 1985. After a short period in general practice, he joined the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, where he completed his PhD investigating the pathogenesis of Streptococcus suis type 2 meningitis in the pig. He then moved to the University Department of Paediatrics, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, to conduct studies on the pathogenesis of Haemophilus influenzae type b meningitis before returning to Scotland in 1990 to become Named Veterinary Surgeon and Principal Research Scientist at the Institute for Animal Health, Neuropathogenesis Unit, Edinburgh. Here, he investigated aspects of peripheral and central pathogenesis of prion diseases, including the mechanism of neuronal degeneration and disease transmission between sheep. Alun moved back to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow in 1997 to become Senior Lecturer and then Reader in Veterinary Pathology, continuing his research interests and also conducting undergraduate teaching in veterinary pathology, post-graduate training and being a member of the diagnostic pathology team. He also extended his research interests to enteric bacterial diseases and veterinary public health. He became a de facto Diplomate of the Europeon College of Veterinary Pathologists in 1998. Alun was appointed as Professor and Head of Department of Pathology and Infectious Diseases at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 2003 and is now Vice-President (Europe) of the C.L.Davis DVM Foundation. He continues to take an active role in teaching, diagnostic pathology and infectious disease research.

Richard Smith qualified as a Veterinarian in 1969. He spent the first 16 years of his career in mixed practice in Britain, Zimbabwe and Australia and always had an interest in ophthalmolgy. In 1985 he became the Director of the Veterinary Practice at The University Of Queensland, where he developed a large specialist eye practice. Richard was a pioneer in the computerised cataract surgery technique known as phacoemulsification and was the first person in Australia to use this technique and implant intra-ocular lenses in 1990. He has taught ophthalmology to Veterinary students and given continuing education courses to Veterinary practitioners for the last 20 years. He has numerous publications in journals, as well as chapters in veterinary text books.

Richard started a specialist ophthalmology practice in Brisbane in 1997 and during that time trained DR Michael Bernays, Dr Edith Hampson and Dr Denise Brudenall. He has also spent many years training Dr Derek Chow on a part time basis.

Richard has been visiting Hong Kong for the past 15 years seeing referrals at the Happy Valley Veterinary Clinic. He has lectured to Hong Kong Vets in the past and is committed to training Vets as much as possible in the limited time he spends in Hong Kong.

Richard retired from full time specialist practice two years ago but still does part time ophthalmology clinics in north Queensland and Hong Kong.

Urs Giger received his veterinary degree from the University of Zürich, Switzerland, where he also pursued his initial clinical training in small animal medicine and surgery and a doctoral thesis on the orthopedic correction of canine hip dysplasia. In 1981, he moved initially as a postdoctoral fellow to the United States, where he subsequently completed a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Florida.

He then joined the faculty of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and has been over the years a clinician in the Medicine, Oncology, and Pediatrics/Genetics Service. He is currently the Charlotte Newton Sheppard Professor of Medicine and Head of Medical Genetics. He has a secondary professorship in internal medicine at the University of Zürich as well as a joint professorship in hematology at the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a diplomate of the American and European College of the Veterinary Internal Medicine as well as a diplomate of the European College of Clinical Pathology. He is a clinician in medicine, hematology, pediatrics, and genetics and is heading the Pediatrics and Genetics Clinic, the Metabolic Genetics Laboratory, the Josephine Deubler Genetic Disease Testing Laboratory, and the Transfusion Medicine Center at the University of Pennsylvania. His clinical and research expertise and interests are in hereditary and hematologic disorders of small animals and are reflected in over 150 original research publications as well as many more reviews, chapters, and scientific abstracts. He also coedited the book The Dog and Its Genome from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press. Among others awards, he was the recipient of the 2002 International Scientific Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and the 2007 International Bourgelat Award from the BSAVA and is a frequently invited speakers at national and international conferences.

Professor Richard Halliwell received both his veterinary degree and his PhD from the University of Cambridge. He spent 16 years teaching in the USA, first at the University of Pennsylvania and then the University of Florida. In 1988 he returned to the UK as William Dick Professor of Veterinary Clinical Studies at the University of Edinburgh, and served 6 years as Dean of the Faculty. Now a Professor Emeritus, he has served as President of both the American and the European Colleges of Veterinary Dermatology (1984-1986 and 1994-1996 respectively), and of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (2003-2004). In 2000 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and he is currently President of the World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology Association. He chairs the International Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis and has authored in excess of 100 peer reviewed papers on dermatology and clinical immunology. At the Fifth World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology in Vienna in August 2004, he was awarded a Lifetime Career Achievement Award by the European College of Veterinary Dermatology.

Philip graduated from the University of Sydney in 1986 and worked in several large animal and mixed practices until cured of the desire to become a large animal practitioner. Moved to the UK in 1990 and began the long road to small animal surgical specialisation. Completed Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics at the Royal College in 1994 then worked in referral practice before returning to Australia in 1996. Started residency in small animal surgery in private practice in Brisbane completing MACVSc in 1998. Moved to the University of Sydney as Senior Registrar then Acting Head of Surgery in 2000. Travelled to the US to the University of Florida as a visiting scholar in 2001 before returning as a founding partner of Veterinary Specialist Services in Brisbane. Appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of Queensland. Surgical interests include urinary tract, vascular, neurological and orthopaedic surgery. Currently involved in several research projects with Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney and the University of Queensland. Has presented at numerous conferences in Australia and overseas, published widely in Veterinary Journals as well as several Textbooks..

Philip is the father of six beautiful children and a devoted supporter of the Queensland Reds and the Wallabies.

Colin Dunlop graduated from the University of Sydney in 1980 and then spent 1 year as a small animal intern at Murdoch University in Western Australia. After a period of small animal practice Colin moved to The University of Glasgow, Scotland, where he was a house surgeon. In 1982 Colin moved to the University of California, Davis, where he completed a residency in anaesthesia/critical patient care. Colin then moved to Colorado State University and from 1986 to 1991 was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences and from 1991 to 1995, an Associate Professor and Chief of the Anesthesia Section. His research interests include studying the anaesthetic responses of animals with clinical disease states and prevention of anaesthesia related morbidity and mortality.

Colin is a Registered Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia in Sydney and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists. He practices small and large animal anaesthesia, consults on anaesthesia and critical care problems and continues to teach anaesthesia to veterinarians, nurses and students. He founded Advanced Anaesthesia Specialists in 1996, an Australian company focussed on development, manufacture and service of innovative products for veterinary anaesthesia and critical care. Fred Reyers is a registered specialist Veterinary Pathologist. After obtaining his BVSc from the University of Pretoria in 1971 Fred worked as a Government Veterinary Officer/Senior Govt. Vet Officer in Zimbabwe until 1973 before taking up the position of Senior Veterinary Officer at Harare, Zimbabwe which he held until 1978. He then moved into the world of academia at the Department of Medicine, University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort firstly as Senior Lecturer (1978-1984), then Associative Professor (1984-1990) and then Professor (1991-1998). From 1996-97 he was the Acting head of Department and then Head of Department (Chair) from 1997-1999. In 1999 Fred was made Professor, Dept. Companion Animal Medicine. From 2001 Feb-March he was Visiting Professor, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, USA. Since 2004 has been employed as a Private Consultant Veterinary Pathologist in Clinical Pathology.

He is the author of 48 published journal articles, 27 published full-length congress presentations, 20 abstracts in international congress proceedings and 39 abstracts in national congress/symposium proceedings as well as 100 presentations at congresses and continuing education events. His current areas of interest include amongst others the pathophysiology of canine babesiosis, serum uric acid concentration in the assessment of liver function and haematological indices in a haemorrhagic anaemia model.

Josh Slater qualified from Edinburgh in 1985. After 4 years in equine and farm animal practice in the North of England, he moved to Cambridge University as a resident in equine medicine. He completed a PhD in equine herpesvirus-1 pathogenesis in 1994 and became a lecturer, then senior lecturer, in equine medicine at Cambridge. He held a Wellcome Trust fellowship between 2001 and 2005. He moved to the Royal Veterinary College in 2005 as Professor of Equine Clinical Studies where he is Director of the Equine Referral Hospital and chair of the equine medicine and surgery group. He is a European Specialist in equine internal medicine and holds a diploma from the European College of Equine Internal Medicine. His research interests are in equine infectious diseases and he runs a research group working on herpesviruses and streptococcal diseases. He is currently President of the British Equine Veterinary Association and President-Elect of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine.
