Dental Workshops - for Veterinarians

'Aspects of dental radiology, extraction techniques and oral surgery'

Two one day workshops will be run on the 26th and 27th July, 2017. The labs will run from 9.00am-5.00pm. Each lab will have 8 participants working in groups of 2 persons. Each group will have its own set of equipment provided. (The content of 26th and 27th July are for the same. You only need to attend for ONE DAY only)

Workshop Timetable

9.00am - 10.30am    Lectures:
1. Veterinary Dental radiography - getting the right diagnostic view more often. Radiographs will be demonstrated to enable interpretation of normal and abnormal findings. This lecture will cover the techniques of obtaining intra-oral dental radiographs and also the equipment used to obtain these.

2. Dental extraction techniques - this lecture will describe the oral and dental anatomy, how teeth are secured in the mouth and how these structures must be overcome to deliver the teeth from the alveolus. It will include open and closed extraction techniques - including use of extraction forceps and will also cover flap creating and closure.

10.30am - 10.45am    Coffee break

10.45am - 1.00pm    Radiology tutorial:
The workshop will examine dental radiographs:
evaluate quality, diagnostic yield and evaluate normal and pathological findings.

1.00pm - 1.45pm    Lunch

1.45pm - 3.30pm    Extraction workshop I
Delegates will:
1. Extract single, two and three rooted teeth.
2. Extract mandibular and maxillary canines.

3.30pm - 3.45pm    Coffee break

3.45pm - 5.00pm    Extraction workshop II
Continue with extraction techniques and design including the raising and suturing of flaps required in dentistry, the use of the high-speed dental unit to section teeth, alveolotomy and alveoloplasty, design of flaps and expansion of these to close surgical sites and equipment maintenance.

Registration is on a first in first served basis. Each participant must register individually as group bookings will not be accepted. Payment in full must be sent to the secretariat within one week of notification of acceptance otherwise your place will not be guaranteed.

Speaker's Biography

Dr Cedric LC Tutt
BSc(Agric), BVSc, BVSc(Hons), MMed Vet(Med), Diplomate EVDC, MRCVS
Past President: European Veterinary Dental College

Graduated with BVSc in 1992

Pursued veterinary dentistry training in the UK and Europe from 1997-2003 Participated in under graduate and post graduate training in the UK 1998-2003 Moved to Cape Town 2004 and his clinic is in a referral hospital providing a dentistry and oral surgery service.

He was admitted to the European Veterinary Dental College in 2007 (Dip EVDC) and has served as President of the EVDC. He is currently a member of the EVDC Examination Committee.

Published numerous articles in the CPD Journal UK Vet
Presented dentistry and oral surgery lectures at congresses in Europe, China, Hong Kong, UK and South Africa.
