The Royal Veterinary College has a comprehensive programme of onsite and online CPD. We pride ourselves on always offering the highest quality independent CPD to inform, entertain and challenge veterinarians and veterinary nurses from many areas of clinical practice. Veterinary education and life-long learning are our business at the RVC and the depth of our clinical expertise and educational commitment to CPD is unrivalled in Europe.

INTERACTIVE ONLINE LECTURES
An exciting new development in CPD at the RVC is our interactive online lecture series. Interactive online lectures not only allow you to hear the lecturer and see slides, radiographs and videos but also allows interaction between participants and the lecturer. "Attending" the lecture is easy - you only need internet access and an email address (specific instructions will be sent to registered participants) - no special computer skills or programs are required. All lectures are recorded so if you cannot "attend" the interactive lecture you may choose to view the recorded version online. The recorded version includes all interaction between the participants and the lecturer as well as the lecturer's teaching material. All lectures will run for 2 hours plus a 30 minute registration and familiarisation period prior to the commencement of the lecture.

e-CPD 6 WEEK ONLINE COURSES
e-CPD courses at the RVC allow veterinarians from around the world to participate in interactive and in depth online learning. The courses are moderated by expert clinical staff. There is no need to log on at any particular time of the day or night so the courses can be completed in your own time.
The courses are internet based so no special software or computer skills are required - you don't have to be a computer geek to enjoy and participate fully! The unique feature of the RVC e-CPD courses is that they are much more than just an online delivery mechanism for technical information - the interactive activities that occur through the discussion boards and with the tutors are integral to the participants' learning and permit veterinarians to share their clinical experiences with, and learn from, a diverse group of colleagues.

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies

The University of Edinburgh is an internationally acclaimed institution and its Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies offers a wide range of expertise in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The R(D)SVS was opened in November 1823, supported by student fees and a grant from the Highland Society of Scotland. It was the work of William Dick, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh Medical School and the London Veterinary College.

William himself was an outstanding practitioner, and held the distinguished position of Veterinary Surgeon to the Queen in Scotland, with his professional opinion being sought throughout the UK.

By the time of his death in 1866, the 818 students he had taught were to be found throughout the world. Among them were the founders of veterinary schools in Glasgow, Liverpool, Ireland, Canada, the USA and Australia. In 1906, the College was named the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College by Act of Parliament. It became a constituent part of the University of Edinburgh in 1951 and a full faculty in 1964.

The School is now part of the University's College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and continues to be a world leader in veterinary education providing a high quality and innovative learning experience.

We can now bring that learning experience to you, through our online professional development courses. We look forward to working with you

Physical therapy from theory to practice is an essential part in the treatment of orthopaedic and neurological patients.

This course gives an overview of the basic principles of physical therapy and their implementation into the clinical practice. The scientific background of common used modalities and their practical use will be explained and exercised during the course.

The topics of the course will cover the following:

Introduction: PT the future of your practice
During this part of the course we will talk about the scientific basics of PT and how to integrate it into your practice. Do we need a special physical therapy examination? What did you examine until now and what will you examine additionally in the future? In the practical part you will train range of motion and muscle circumference measurements.

From theory to practice
Let's talk about common used physical therapy modalities. We will cover Massage, Thermotherapy, Therapeutic Ultrasound, Electrotherapy, Hydrotherapy and therapeutic exercises. What are the physiological effects of the different modalities; are they evidenced based medicine and how can we use them in animals? Each modality will be explained in theory and practice.

Common indications and how to design a rehabilitation program
During this part of the course specialist surgeons will present the basic knowledge, diagnosis and the conservative/surgical therapy. Subsequently we will present the main rehabilitation plans for each disorder with focus on osteoarthritis, "back pain", joints and spine post operative treatment and a special on "the cat in the physical therapy practice".

Put it all together: Do it now yourself
You will work in small groups with one of our patients. Examine the dog, make the diagnosis and develop the treatment plan. Present your results to the other participants and discuss with them!

Dr. Richard Gowan
BVSc (Hons) MACVSc (Feline medicine) CMAVA.
The Cat Clinic - Melbourne

Richard has a passion for all things feline medicine and runs his own cat only clinic in Melbourne. He established this clinic in 2005 after spending 6 years at the Cat clinic in Brisbane training under Dr Vic Menrath. He runs his 4 vet practice with the able help of his fiancˆme Dr Amy Lingard - who recently passed her Fellowships in Feline medicine along with Dr. Carolyn O'Brien, another feline specialist. Richard's interests are squarely in general feline practice and his particular interest is geriatric patient management. Critical to this is feline musculoskeletal pain and osteoarthritis and its recognition and safe and effective management. He regularly presents lectures based on these interests and has recently presented an abstract at the ECVIM regarding the long-term use of NSAID's in cats.

"Feline Osteoarthritis"
Feline osteoarthritis and chronic musculoskeletal pain has always had a poor rate of recognition - both by owners and Veterinarians. Key to this has been the lack of evidence to the safety and efficacy of therapeutics in managing feline patients suffering from chronic pain. This is especially problematic when faced with geriatric patients suffering intercurrent disease. This presentation will review the prevalence of feline arthritis, how to improve recognition of chronic pain and then review modalities of successful and safe management of these patients.

"Feline Diabetes - Where are we today?"

Where are we today with feline diabetes? With the advent of long acting synthetic insulins and a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology underpinning feline diabetes, offering clients an expectation of achieving rapid remission is a realistic goal in many cases. Richard has had the benefit of using long acting insulins such as Glargine for over 8 years now and will share his clinical application of glargine and feline diabetes within general practice
