Job Description:

An exciting opportunity is available for an energetic small animal veterinarian to work on the tropical island of Palau in the western Pacific. An easy-going personality and the ability to work well with the local Palauan support team will be highly regarded. The successful applicant will be the only veterinarian doing clinical work in Palau. Koror State supports a multi-faceted program for the community that is run by the veterinarian. This rigorous program encompasses small animal medical care, animal shelter management, managing a dog trapping and euthanasia/spay/neuter program, running large spay/neuter clinics and a community and public education program, periodic assistance to national government with animal health issues, continued education and training of Palauan staff and increasing the health and well being of animals so as to diminish disease and health hazards in dogs and other animals, and as vectors to humans.

Key responsibilities include supervising 10 staff in trapping, kennel, routine clinic activities and laboratory testing, being on call for emergencies 24/7, and maintaining drug logs. As the only veterinarian doing clinical work in Palau, occasional demands for exotic wildlife, farm and large animal care, are required. Opportunity to travel and attend Pacific area vet-related seminars is likely. The position reports to the Koror State Governor.

The facility opened in 2005 and was staffed by Palau's first full-time veterinarian from April 2006 until now. 10 full time staff work at the shelter/clinic including veterinary assistants/Para-vets, a laboratory assistant, dog trappers, clinic and shelter assistants and office staff. Equipment at the clinic includes: Isoflurane anesthesia machine, vital signs monitor, orthopedic surgery equipment, suction and electrocautery, x-ray machine and automatic processor, Abaxis Vetscan and HM2, prothrombine monitoring system, Nikon microscope, media incubator, centrifuges, and ELISA reader and washer.

Location/Job Information:

Famous for its scuba diving, Palau is a developing island nation in the western Pacific with a population of ~20,000 people. The main population center in Palau is the town of Koror located in Koror State. The Koror State government enacted legislation in 2004 aimed at controlling the stray dog population, requiring all dogs to be licensed and tagged. The Animal Shelter was designed to implement this legislation through a tagging and euthanasia program. The long term goal of the overall program is dog control, through sterilization. Koror State works closely with the Palau Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a non-profit organization, who supports care of domestic animals and spay/neuter clinics. PAWS helps run the veterinary clinic through purchase of all medical supplies and supports multiple aspects of the shelter and clinic. Koror State paravets were trained in a distance learning program in 2004. Living expenses are moderate and taxes are low, ~12%.

Qualification Requirements:

DVM or equivalent from an AVMA (or national equivalent) recognized university and a current veterinary license. A minimum 5 years experience practicing at a veterinary clinic or as a shelter veterinarian is desired. Applicant must be fluent in written and oral English, work well in an instructor¡¦s role and be sensitive to cultural differences in a foreign country. Preferably the applicant will have experience in a developing nation in the role of a veterinarian or in another capacity, or experience as a shelter vet. Experience with infectious diseases and orthopedic surgeries desired.

You will:

  • Assist Veterinary Surgeons while performing routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the Equine Hospital.

Thonglor pet hospital would like to invite all the veterinarians who have particular interests in small animal ophthalmology diseases to participate in "A general practice for small animal ophthalmology seminar". It is a great opportunity for Thonglor pet hospital to honorably present a small animal ophthalmology seminar (part I) by Dr.Carmen Colitz who is certified by ACVO (American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology), an expert in special eye disease from the United States. The seminar will be held on 12-13 July, 2010 and is one of the best opportunities to improve your skills in small animal ophthalmology and learn more about the ACVO standards.

This seminar will cover common ophthalmic diseases of the dog and cat. On the first day, the diagnosis and management of diseases of the anterior (cornea, uveitis , glaucoma, cataract) and posterior segments of the eye will be lectured by Dr. Carmen Colitz , an ACVO board certified veterinary ophthalmologist. On the second day, a workshop on diagnostic examination techniques and basic ophthalmic equipments that should be part of a small animal hospital will be offered and presented. Examination of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, ocular ultrasound and intraocular pressure determination using a variety of instruments will be demonstrated. This will be followed by a practice in surgery of the adnexa and cornea.
